The Indianapolis-based Tucker Brothers are one of the vital jazz-rock fusion bands in the US today. Having released an acclaimed album called Two Parts way back in 2020, the brothers are back on the scene with an intriguing recent live album, released in early 2024 called Live At Chatterbox. With the brothers, Joel Tucker (guitars) and Nick Tucker (bass), receiving able backup from Sean Imboden (sax) and Carrington Clinton (drums), Live At Chatterbox is filled with upbeat, jazz-tinged, high energy instrumental fusion and serves as a fine compliment to the brothers studio album.
The second project with the Commodore Trio was totally for fun and recorded on 3/25/2023. I just wanted to go into the studio and make something good with my friends. I was really happy with how all of the mixing and mastering went though so I wanted to share it with the world! I’m actually working on writing a full length for that group...
One thing that’s nice about that band is that we did most of the writing together, that’s why it’s called “Communal” . We worked together as a community to write the songs.

Гитарист Джоэль Такер, закончивший в 2012 году Университет Индианы, громко заявил о себе на Indy Jazz Fest, посвященном памяти Веса Монтгомери, где ему довелось делить сцену с такими гитарными асами, как Пэт Мартино, Рассел Мэлоне или Питер Бернстайн. Как видно, не прочь отведать этой яичницы с помидорами и зеленью и Джоэль Такер. А в композиции и он, и брат Ник вдоволь посолировали. Не были статистами и их партнеры. Имбодин логикой своей позиции постоянно выходил в диалог с гитарой, наиболее удачно, на мой вкус, - в композиции Away. Крепкий образчик мэйнстрима из Индианаполиса поступает в продажу 1 февраля, а что касается Джоэля Такера, то он в этот день наносит двойной удар: одновременно увидит свет арт-роковый и тоже концертный EP другого его коллектива, Commodore Trio, под названием Communal.

Der Gitarrist Joel Tucker und der Bassist Nick Tucker sind aus der heutigen Jazzszene von Indianapolis nicht wegzudenken. Vor kurzem haben sie sich als Tucker Brothers zusammengetan und „Live At Chatterbox“ aufgenommen. Das Quartettset, an dem auch der Tenorsaxophonist Sean Imboden und der Schlagzeuger Carrington Clinton beteiligt sind, hat sich bei ihrem Live-Auftritt u.a. aucg gängiger Standards bedient und ihnen eine Frischzellenkur verpasst, so auch beim Opener Hoagy Carmichaels “Skylark”.
Dabei fällt der expressive Charakter des Vortrags auf, der vom Gitarristen Joel Tucker und dem Tenorsaxofonisten Sean Imboden bestimmt wird. Herausragend ist das Solo des Holzbläsers, der das Original vergessen lässt. Sehr ausgereift und frisch erscheint das Spiel in seinem Ausdruck. Doch auch der Bassist Nick Tucker ist mit einem Solo präsent, derweil man Stimmengewirr im Hintergrund hört – ein Live-Konzert eben mit einem nicht immer konzentriert zuhörenden Publikum. Im Übrigen, dem Stück wohnt so gar nichts von einer melodischen Ballade inne, die man ansonsten zu hören bekommt. Und das ist ein Hörerlebnis, das überzeugt, auch bei den weich gezeichneten Klängen der Gitarre und dem Beckenrauschen, das dem Schlagwerker Carrington 'Clint Breeze' Clinton geschuldet ist. Das nachfolgende Stück „Shakshuka“ – gleichnamig wie das israelische Nationalgericht - wird ebenso wie der Opener durch das sehr dynamische Spiel des Tenorsaxofonisten geprägt. Das hat dann etwas von Post-Bop und Post-Modern, oder? Und Joel Tucker scheint auf seinem Saiteninstrument wie mit „Siebenmeilenstiefeln“ unterwegs zu sein. Da huschen die Finger flink über Bünde und Saiten, lassen an einen musikalischen Sprint denken. Derweil ist der Bassist in seinem Solo eher in sich gekehrt und nicht gar so flink wie der Gitarrist unterwegs.
Ein weiterer Standard auf dem Album ist “Caravan”, das auf dem Album eine gewisse Funk-Note ausstrahlt. Schnurrend und surrend stimmt der Saxofonist das Thema an, derweil im Hintergrund schnelle Gitarrenläufe zu vernehmen sind. Nachfolgend übernimmt Joel Tucker das Thema und wandelt es, durchaus in up tempo und dabei die Bandbreite des Gitarrenklangs ausreizend. Teilweise ergeht sich Joel Tucker auch in Umspielungen einzelner Fragmente des Themas, ehe dann der Saxofonist erneut ins musikalische Geschehen eingreift. Ein wunderbarer Hörgenuss, frisch und durchaus wie gesagt mit Funk gewürzt.
Nick Tucker hat die Ballade “Mantra” zum Album beigesteuert und eröffnet dieses Stück auch. Gefolgt wird das Bass-Solo von einem getragenen, „langatmigen“ Saxofonsolo, das stellenweise wie ein Lamento anmutet, das Blues-Einfärbungen zeigt. Sehr flott im Tempo und in klanglichen Wellenformen kommt „Away“ daher. Dabei ist das Gitarrensolo von Joel Tucker ein besonderer Hinhörer. Wie Farbtupfer an Farbtupfer setzt der Gitarrist seine Klangtupfer, die verschmelzenden Aquarellfarben gleichen. „Rhythm Changed“ heißt es dann zum Schluss des sehr hörenswerten Albums.
Der Gitarrist Joel Tucker ist aber auch in seinem Trio zu hören. Es ist das Commodore Trio, das die EP „Communal“ in Eigenregie veröffentlicht hat. Es handelt sich bei den erschienenen Tracks weitgehend um Improvisationen des Gitarristen Joel Tucker mit dem Bassisten und Tastenspieler Brendan Keller-Tuberg und dem Drummer Justin Clark.
Ob es sich bei der eingespielten Musik um Rock mit Jazzeinflüssen handelt, muss der Hörer selbst bewerten. Ein wenig erinnert der Opener “We Are Surprised” dank der eingesprochenen Lyrik an den Ansatz, den Jim Morrison bei The Doors pflegte: Poesie und Rock. Dabei vermischen sich beim Commodore Trio Gitarrenpassagen mit einem Geräuschfeld, das an rinnende Wasser bzw. rauschendes Laub erinnern lässt. Die Gitarrenriffs klingen ein wenig zerbrechlich. Ein deutlich wahrnehmbares Rauschen drängt sich im Verlauf des Stücks auf und wird zu einem Schwirren und Brodeln. Vom Charakter her ist „Communal“ sehr rockig ausgeformt, auch dank des distinkten Drumming und den dahingleitenden Gitarrenpassagen. Kristallin klingt das, was Brendan-Keller-Tuberg mit seinem Tastenspiel als musikalische Note beisteuert. Diskantes dringt an unser Ohr. Und dann, ja dann, ist Joel Tucker am Werk, auch mit einer jaulenden und wimmernden Gitarre. Ansonsten denkt der eine oder andere beim Hören an Peter Green und Mark Knopfler, oder? Irgendwie vermittelt das Klangbild eine Vorstellung von unbegrenzter Weite, von einem nicht verstellten Blick über flache Grassteppe oder über eine nordische Hochebene wie das Dovrefjell.
Zu hören sind zudem zwei von Gitarrenriffs geprägte „Klangbilder“, wenn “Soundscape 1” und “Soundscape 2” zu hören sind. Das erste zeichnet sich durch sehr bedächtige Gitarrensequenzen aus, die über einen teilweise brodelndem Klangteppich gelegt wurden. Hierbei hat man den Eindruck von ein wenig Südstaatenrock gemischt mit Pathos und Lyrizismus, oder? Doch das ist nur eine Momentaufnahme, denn die drei Musiker finden auch Wege für eine Klangeruption, für feurigen Rock und für eindrucksvolle Klangwalzen. Wenn man es nicht besser wüsste, würde man meinen, Sampling spiele eine gewichtige Rolle bei Tuckers Klangbildern, die ja noch einen zweiten Teil haben. Dieser entwickelt sich gleichsam verhalten aus dem Off. Dabei hört man auch einen tropfenden Tastenklang zu den sich wiederholenden Gitarrenpassagen. Man meint, man lausche einer Endlosschleife, die sich nach und nach neuerlich zusammengesetzt zeigt. Dabei erleben wir eine Art klanglicher Trittsteine.
Über den Track “Switzerland” lesen wir in der Kurzbeschreibung der EP: „‘Switzerland’ (which is topped off by an impressive guitar solo), the tight trio pushes the boundaries of rock and explores several moods with the music evolving in unpredictable directions. The electronic trio displays its own musical personality and keeps listeners guessing before the mini-suite reaches its logical and peaceful conclusion.“

Guitarist, Joel Tucker is a respected musical force on the Indianapolis jazz scene. He and his brother Nick have recorded together the recently released album, (Tucker Brothers Live at Chatterbox) and separately, (this album) spreading their talent like sweet jam across the bandstands of the who’s who in jazz. On this EP trio excursion, Joel Tucker describes his trio music as original and mostly improvised. The arrangements are dancing on the edge of creative rock with a jazz sensibility. He is the composer. On the opening composition, “We Are Surprised” Tucker adds a poem by Ada Limón that his bassist recites. This is a jazz trio that connects improvisational phrases with Justin Clark’s steady heartbeat on the drums. His drums are prominent on the tune “Communal” that moves from a Rock-feel into a contemporary jazz motif when bassist Brendan Keller Tuberg sits down and plays a piano solo. Afterwards Tucker enters on guitar to push the pendulum back towards rock & roll. His arrangement uses cut-time to pull the music out of rock and back into jazz. Tucker’s guitar solo smooths the curves and jagged edges of this tune as the trio fades into quiet. Track #3 is “Soundscape 1” and is followed by their song called “Soundscape 2.” Both set ethereal moods that start peacefully, then crescendo into other-worldly energy with fuzzy-sounding guitar. For jazz fans who also appreciate the rock genre, this musical project blends the two like bread and butter.
Two Parts is just the ticket to bring their music to the eyes and ears of jazz music fans worldwide.

Individually and collectively important parts of the Indianapolis jazz scene, guitarist Joel and bassist Nick Tucker – collectively known as the Tucker Brothers – are instructors of Jazz Studies at Ball State University and have distinctive resumes boasting performances with and alongside greats ranging from Pat Martino and Russell Malone to Randy Brecker and Stefan Harris.
The title of the third album, the adventurous and dazzlingly eclectic fusion date Two Parts, is a bit ironic, since the brothers (aka the “two parts”) are in full ensemble action throughout, creating a multitude of mood swings and tempo variations and improvisational jam magic with the two guys rounding out their quartet, Sean Imboden (saxophone) and Brian Yarde (drums) and a dynamic cadre of guests. Wordless vocalist Elena Escudero turns the silky, easy flowing opener “Warm Heart” into a soulful dreamscape, while saxophonist Walter Smith III creates a fiery horn conversation/duality with Imboden on the increasingly rambunctious “When Souls Meet.”
There’s also pianist Ellie Pruneau, who creates a steady, elegantly hypnotic underscore for the multi-movement, rhythmically varied title track; and saxophonist Amanda Gardener, who brings fresh whimsy to the perfectly titled “Sundancing.”
While the Tuckers enjoy engaging their high-end company for the most part, they also dazzle here and there with powerful solos, most prominently with Nick’s plucky bass intro to “Heavy Drop” and Joel’s cool fire electric guitar solo on “Lifely.” -Jonathan Widran

Как вы понимаете. Индиана – далеко не главный джазовый центр США. Но в искусстве, на мой взгляд, понятие провинциальности неуместно. Если человек талантлив, он даже в самом медвежьем углу может создавать шедевры, особенно сегодня, когда Сеть стерла все границы и открыла доступ к любым источникам и позволяет быть в курсе всех современных тенденций. Я не хочу сказать, что Two Parts, новый (уже третий по счету) альбом ансамбля Tucker Brothers из Индианаполиса – это шедевр, но это интересная и достойная музыка, которая заслуживает вашего внимания.
Интерес к музыке у братьев Такеров возник довольно поздно. Они росли в семье, где музыка отнюдь не была наследственным делом. Оба брата увлеклись ею уже в школьные годы. Интерес к джазу возник еще позже. Для обоих братьев толчком здесь послужили прослушанные пластинки: для гитариста Джоэля – альбом гитариста Веса Монтгомери, для басиста Ника – альбом фортепьянного трио Билла Эванса.
Джоэль и Ник накопили определенный опыт выступлений с разными коллективами, прежде, чем организовали свой ансамбль и выпустили в 2015 году первый альбом. В Two Parts помимо постоянного состава, в который входят тенор-саксофонист Шон Имбодин и ударник Брайан Джарде, участвует также целый ряд гостей. С вокалом без слов от Елены Эскудеро мы знакомимся уже в стартовом треке Warm Heart, задающем тон всему альбому: тонкой, атмосферичной пьесе, где нежному (можно сказать, ангельскому) голосу Эскудеро вторят столь же мягкие и действительно теплые, под стать названию пьесы, инструментальные партии. Музыка братьев Такер (все пьесы альбома – авторские) совсем не похожа на характерный американский straight-ahead jazz и в то же время в ней нет ничего авангардного. Это такой деликатный, приближенный к камерной музыке и очень симпатичный мэйнстрим, который хорошо слушать вдвоем с близким человеком или в одиночестве, предаваясь романтичным мечтам. В Sundancing звук альт-саксофона гостьи Аманды Грандье прорезает пространство, словно солнечный луч, а последующее гитарное соло Джоэла ярко расцвечивает очень «летнюю» атмосферу композиции. Приятное впечатление оставили и его сольные партии в Lifely, в титульной Two Parts и в финальной Return To Balance, но, пожалуй, это единственная пьеса, где гитарное интро несет ощущение тревоги, в целом не характерное для этого очень умиротворяющего альбома. https://jazzquad.ru/index.pl?act=PRODUCT&id=5328

Highly impressive jazz statements The Tucker Brothers – TWO PARTS: This is another “first listen” for me… this wonderful album features The Tucker Brothers Joel Tucker guitar, Nick Tucker bass, with Sean Imboden tenor saxophone, Brian Yarde drums and several special guests – Elena Escudero voice, Walter Smith III tenor Saxophone, Ellie Pruneau piano & Amanda Gardier alto saxophone… a very well-produced and enjoyable video gives you clear insight for what they’re trying to accomplish…
I particularly like the gentle “swayed-back” aura of their playing… be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube channel, where you’ll find many more exciting videos… I did.
Tunes like “When Souls Meet“, featuring Walter’s tenor work, will hold you totally spellbound… you’ll definitely become an “instant believer” in The Tucker Brothers talent and energy as you listen to this one (over & over again)!
The vocals that Elena performs on the opener, “Warm Heart“, are simply magic… the song has a “mellowness” that few are able to achieve these days… some of the coolest jazz vocal work I’ve heard (yet) in 2019!
Joel’s guitar on “Lifely” is shimmering with the spirit of life & the living of it… I predict that this composition will garner MAJOR airplay on jazz stations ’round the globe… it certainly merits it, folks.
The bass intro from Nick on “Heavy Drop” is similar to what you might expect, but since the tune clocks in at 9:00, there is plenty of room for the other players to contribute to the conversation they’re having with you… this is my personal favorite of the nine songs offered up for this superb jazz adventure!
Truth be told, I haven’t been this impressed with a “new” group (new to me, anyway) in a while… I give these wonderful players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) score of 4.99. - Rotcod Zzaj
